Funding Your Care

Funding – Private Care

We understand that financing health and social care can be a concern, but there are many ways to fund your care, whether through personal savings, family support, or other financial options. Many people pay for home care and support using their own private funds or with help from family or friends.

Here are a few options to consider:

  • Personal savings or investments – You can use income from pensions or unlock personal savings, such as stocks and shares.
  • Equity Release – This allows you to unlock tax-free cash from your home, helping you stay in the place you love while funding the care and lifestyle you deserve.
  • Health Insurance – Check with your provider to see if your policy covers home care and support.

In addition to these private funding options, make sure you’re claiming all the benefits you’re entitled to. Contact your local council to see if you’re eligible for state benefits that could improve your financial situation, making it easier to afford home care.

  • Attendance Allowance – A benefit for people over State Pension age needing help to stay independent due to illness or disability.
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – If you’re under State Pension age, you may qualify for this benefit instead.

Funding – Direct Payments and Care Needs Assessment

Direct payments are funds provided by your local social services to you or your caregiver to help finance your care. This system gives you greater control over your life, allowing you to decide how you receive care and choose your own service provider, rather than having social services make those decisions for you.

If you’re facing difficulties with everyday tasks like washing, cooking, or getting dressed, you or your GP can request a care needs assessment from your local social services. During this assessment, they will discuss your health, the home care you require, and any existing support you have to determine the assistance you need to remain independent in your home for as long as possible.

If you qualify for assistance, the social services will carry out an additional evaluation of your financial circumstances to assess whether there will be any charges for your home care, and if so, what the amount will be
