The Hica ‘SHINE’ Initiative.
An aspirational philosophy that underpins our organisational commitment to continuous improvement and a personal pledge to ‘make a difference’.
We encourage everyone to get involved and embrace our collective responsibility to make life better for every person receiving services from or connected with the hica group.
SHINE is a symbol of innovation, involvement and improvement and that philosophy now underpins everything we do.
SHINE – We believe our staff have got what it takes to make a difference – they have made the SHINE promise.
It only takes one person to make a difference
The Chief Executive writes:
"We had a guest speaker come to HICA to talk about his experiences of caring for his mum who had vascular dementia. I was really looking forward to hearing him speak, but nothing could have prepared me, or my staff team for the powerful and emotional impact he would have on everyone who listened to his story. Tommy Whitelaw looked after his mum Joan who was diagnosed with vascular dementia from 2007 to 2012 keeping his promise to her to care for her at home. He talks about his wonderful, magnificent mum and how life was for them both as they both tried to come to terms with what was happening. What really struck home for me was Tommy talking about the loneliness, isolation and the constant struggle to get the correct care and advice for him and his mum. Tommy related a story of how one day he was giving personal care to his mum and feeling lost and alone. No-one had ever shown him how to deliver personal care and he didn’t know if he was doing it right or not. In the middle of this low point a District Nurse arrived and put her hand on Tommy’s shoulder and assured him he was doing a great job of looking after his mum. This single act of kindness had the effect of revitalising Tommy and gave him the strength to keep going.
It was clear to me why Tommy included this anecdote – it only takes one person to make a difference. As CEO of The Hica Group I introduced our Shine initiative to demonstrate HICA’s pledge to ‘make a difference’ and to emphasise our belief that while we are all part of a team we are also all individuals who can be the person that puts their hand on someone’s shoulder and says’ You are doing great’. But it also made me think about how we can all be that person who through a kind word or action can make a difference to someone’s life.
At the end of his talk, and throughout his campaign tour, Tommy collects pledges from his audience on how they will make a difference to people’s lives and I am proud of the way the Hica staff responded to this. I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to Tommy for his talk and for his dedication to raising awareness of dementia, and I would like to make a pledge of my own ‘ to do everything in my power to ensure that my staff can achieve their own pledges – and make a difference to the lives of the people they support in our services’. What would your pledge be?"
