Buckshaw Retirement Village Scoops Specialist, Prestigious Award

Staff at pioneering specialist dementia care village, The Lodge, at Buckshaw Retirement Village in Chorley are celebrating having gained another prestigious accolade.

The Laing & Buisson's Independent Specialist Care Award for 'Care Home Provider of the Year 2012' was presented to the senior management team by writer and broadcaster Ruby Wax, at a gala dinner at the London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square earlier this month.

Launched in 2011, Laing & Buisson's Independent Specialist Care Awards draw attention to the best performing independent providers working in the provision of social care services for adults with learning or physical disabilities or mental health conditions whether that be in residential care, homecare or specialist hospitals.

Phil Hill, Village Director said: "I'm very proud to be a part of the award winning team here. Our winning formula is based on superb physical design and unrivalled care. Everything we do is geared around the needs of residents and our person-centred approach genuinely makes an impact on individual wellbeing and quality of life – however challenging the needs are."

Penni Brown, Managing Director, added: "Our dedicated senior management team nurtures, mentors and leads an extraordinary group of individuals from varied walks of life and each and every one of them helps to make a vital difference to the lives of vulnerable older people. We are also passionate about the use of therapeutic activity as a means of reducing behaviours which challenge care which has not only improved quality of life, but has enabled continuity of care and seen a 50%+ reduction in the use of anti-psychotics since May 2010."

The Lodge's unique design features and environment received Europe's first Gold Standard accreditation for dementia design from Stirling University. The apartments at the lodge enable couples to stay together and feature their own front door, key, letterbox, number and nameplate and the highly acclaimed and unprecedented Market Square comprise a range of facilities including a cinema, pub, tea shop and pet shop – a valuable communal space that encourages safe, stimulating activity and easy family and community involvement.

Penni concluded: "This award confirms the fact that The Lodge has been intrinsic in taking care homes to a different level by pushing the boundaries with design, taking risks and challenging regulations and our exceptional care team reinforces this with their energy, skill, dedication and enthusiasm."
