Elm Tree Court Launch New Dementia Café
HICA Group specialist care home Elm Tree Court have launched their brand new Dementia Café. Situated on Preston Road in East Hull it will allow members of the community to socialise together whilst giving a platform to discuss and learn about dementia.
The free event will take place on the third Thursday afternoon of teach month, with people encouraged to visit to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a chat with others who might share their perspective and experiences of memory loss.
There will also be occasional speakers and activities designed to raise awareness. For the first café HICA Group Regional Trainer Steve Reed gave an illuminating talk about what dementia is and the many forms it can take. His talk was very well received by everyone who attended and many positive comments made. One attendee, who has a relative that lives with dementia, said, “I thought I knew what dementia was but today’s talk has really opened my eyes and I feel a bit better equipped for when interacting with someone who has dementia. It’s great to have a place to be able to talk to someone who understands.”
Activities coordinator, Claire Gillies said: “We want to provide a safe, comfortable, engaging environment where people with dementia or memory difficulties and their partners and friends can meet, enjoy some tea and cake, speak to professionals, share stories and any worries, mix socially, and get support from others who are on a similar journey.”
Elm Tree Court hope to increase dementia awareness in the wider community through these regular Cafés and provide a safe space for people to receive support while living with dementia.
Elm Tree Court provide residential dementia care and support services for older people, ensuring the services provided focus on enhancing the quality of life of everyone who live there and are always designed to cater for individual needs and wishes.
