Dementia Action Week at HICA

Dementia Action Week is the 17th-23rd May

Across our Homes residents and staff have been taking part in activities to raise awareness. This year, Dementia Action Week is 17-23 May. Our homes have been doing a wide variety of activities including Elm tree Court with their Dementia Cafe, Sunningdale with their group discussions and craft sessions and The Hollies with their scarecrow which is part of the local scarecrow trail.

How we Support people living with a Dementia

At The HICA Group we are a leading provider of dementia care in the UK and have played a significant role in the development of leading research into dementia care provision with both University of Stirling and Bradford University Dementia Care Group. The physical representation of these principles is amply demonstrated at our developments, which has attracted numerous awards. One of our care homes was the first in Europe to be awarded a Gold Standard in Excellence in Dementia Design.

Our dementia services are highly specialised and designed to support people and their families. The unique design features, skilled care and support teams, facilities, and outstanding services, combine to make a real difference to the quality of life of every resident.

We provide security, familiarity, comfortable surroundings, inspiring activities and a level of care and support that is second-to-none. We will support people to develop memory assistive techniques, plan structure to their day and maintain their social networks. Supporting people to carry out activities themselves – ‘doing with’ rather than ‘doing for’ – is central to how we work.

We recognise that dementia affects more people than the person with the condition and we work closely with families and carers at all times, particularly in the development of the care plan.

Our highly skilled managers work closely with you and, as appropriate, your partner, carer, family, and significant others to plan the right support for you. The support will be based on your choices, interests, and needs, to assist you to live well with dementia and achieve the outcomes you want.

Our fully trained support workers work with each person at home or out and about in the community. They give support to: – maintain your confidence, skills and independence and help you stay involved in your community – keep you doing things you enjoy doing – manage everyday activities, including help with personal care tasks.
